Comprehensive Eye Exams

At Bluebonnet Optometry in San Antonio, we are dedicated to providing exceptional eye care services to our patients. One of the key services we offer is comprehensive eye exams, which are crucial for maintaining optimal vision health.

A routine eye exam is a service provided by a licensed optometrist that provides information on your vision, glasses or contact lens prescription and health of the eyes. We recommend having a routine eye exam every year to avoid neglecting eye conditions such as chronic dry eye, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, cataracts all of which can affect your vision.

An exam would be in three parts: Pre-Testing, Refraction, Ocular Health. The technician will perform all of the preliminary testing giving the doctor essential information about your eyes. Then the doctor will check your vision and your prescription. Lastly the doctor will examen the health of your eyes with light and special lenses. A dilated eye exam is also recommended every other year if there is no history of ocular conditions. If you’re over the age of 60, African American and over the age of 40, have a family history of glaucoma or a diabetic then a yearly dilated exam is recommended.

Our experienced optometrist, Dr. Gandara, utilizes advanced diagnostic techniques and state-of-the-art equipment to assess your visual acuity, evaluate the overall health of your eyes, and detect any potential issues or conditions.

Pre-Testing: Setting the Foundation

Before your eye exam, our team will conduct pre-testing procedures to gather important information about your eyes and vision. These tests help us establish a baseline for further evaluations and assist our optometrist in providing personalized care. Pre-testing includes:

  • Visual Acuity Measurement: We will assess your visual acuity using an eye chart, which helps determine the sharpness and clarity of your vision at different distances.
  • Tonometry: This test measures the intraocular pressure within your eyes, helping us screen for glaucoma, a potentially sight-threatening condition.
  • Autorefraction: This automated test provides an objective assessment of your refractive error, assisting in determining the appropriate prescription for your glasses or contact lenses.

Refraction: Precise Prescription Determination

The refraction process involves determining your exact eyeglass or contact lens prescription. Our optometrist will use various techniques to measure the way light bends as it enters your eyes, helping them determine the precise level of nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, or presbyopia you may have. This part of the eye exam allows us to provide you with accurate vision correction solutions.

Ocular Health Assessment: Protecting Your Eyes

The ocular health assessment is a critical component of our comprehensive eye exams. Our optometrist will carefully evaluate the health of your eyes, looking for signs of any underlying conditions or diseases. This assessment involves:

  • Slit-Lamp Examination: Using a specialized microscope, we examine the structures of your eyes, including the cornea, iris, lens, and retina. This helps us identify any abnormalities, such as cataracts, macular degeneration, or corneal disorders.
  • Retinal Evaluation: Through the use of dilating eye drops, we can examine the back of your eye, including the retina and optic nerve. This allows us to detect early signs of conditions like diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, or glaucoma.
  • Eye Pressure Evaluation: By performing tonometry as part of the ocular health assessment, we can identify elevated intraocular pressure, which may indicate glaucoma.
  • Visual Field Testing: This test assesses your peripheral vision, ensuring that there are no blind spots or areas of vision loss.
